How the USAA Secured Credit Card works

Set your
credit limit

You could be approved for a credit limit from $250-$5,000. Your final credit limit will equal the amount you choose to pay into a refundable, interest-earning security deposit.

It's a real
credit card

You can use your secured card for purchases like any other credit card and build good habits by paying your bill on time every month.

Help build
your credit

Your secured card activity is reported to the 3 main credit bureaus. If you use your card responsibly, you could build your credit and may qualify for an upgrade to an unsecured USAA credit card.

How to get a secured credit card

Step

1

Have a USAA Bank checking or savings account

Your secured credit card will need a security deposit which will be funded by a USAA Bank checking or savings account.

Step

2

Apply for a secured
credit card

Once you have a checking or savings account with USAA Bank, you're eligible to apply for a secured credit card.

Step

3

Choose your security deposit amount

If approved, open a certificate of deposit (CD) with funds from your USAA Bank checking or savings account. This CD acts as your security deposit, and your credit limit is set to the same amount.

Secured credit card FAQ

A secured credit card can be used like any other credit card, but requires a refundable security deposit from a USAA Bank checking or savings account. The amount of the security deposit will equal your card's credit limit. You can use the credit card anywhere cards are accepted and you can add it to your digital wallet for in-person contactless or online purchases.

Secured cards are designed for people who want to build or rebuild their credit. Your card activity is reported to the three main credit bureaus. Responsible credit behavior, such as making payments on time, could help your credit history.

If approved, you'll open a certificate of deposit (CD) funded by a USAA Federal Savings Bank deposit account. This is your card's security deposit. The amount you deposit into the interest-earning CD depends on your card's credit limit, from $250 to $5,000. Your CD earns interest, but isn't used to make your payments.

Periodically, we'll review your credit history and other factors to see if you qualify.

If you qualify for an upgrade, your account will remain open and it will be converted to an unsecured credit card and your existing credit history will not be affected.

Yes, if your account is upgraded, you may request to have your Secured Certificate of Deposit (CD) closed and the balance mailed to you. Otherwise, the CD will close on its maturity date, and we will mail the balance to you at that time.
