It helps protect you if you’re responsible for someone’s injuries or property damage — even if away from home.
It may also cover legal costs if someone sues you. Review your coverage.
Your liability coverage should equal the value of your net worth, or the total of your assets minus liabilities.
If your net worth is higher than the maximum coverage allowed, consider purchasing umbrella insurance.
You can remove your mortgage company from your policy by going to your Homeowners Account Summary page and selecting “Update Mortgage.”
If you’d been paying your homeowners insurance through your escrow account, you’ll now receive that bill directly from USAA.
If you have another active USAA primary property policy, you can cancel your homeowners insurance on usaa.com from your Homeowners Account Summary page.

Discounts and savings
There are many ways to potentially reduce your premium. We have savings for bundling policies, having a home security system and being claims free for five years or more.
You may also increase your deductibles to reduce your premium. Be sure to set aside enough in your emergency fund to cover your deductibles.
You can also take the following steps to help prevent losses:
- Lock all doors and windows and use a security system when away from the home.
- Trim trees so they don’t grow over the roof.
- Turn off your water when leaving home for an extended period of time.
