What’s a temporary credit card block?

It’s a way to temporarily stop your card from being used, so it stays secure.

You might need to block a credit card if:

  • You’ve misplaced it.
  • You want to stop an unauthorized person from using it.
  • You want to decline new or unexpected transactions.

What could prevent me from blocking or unblocking a credit card?

Your credit card might not be eligible for several reasons.

  • We blocked it due to suspicious activity.
  • We suspended the account because of misuse.
  • You’re an authorized user trying to unblock your credit card.
  • You’re an authorized user trying to manage another cardholder’s credit card.

What types of transactions get declined when I block a credit card?

These include things like:

  • Requesting cash advances.
  • Using the credit card for overdraft protection.
  • Making purchases through your digital wallet such as Apple Pay®, Samsung Pay® or Google Pay®.
  • Ordering convenience checks.
  • Requesting balance transfers.

What happens to pending transactions on a blocked credit card?

New and recurring transactions that are pending might still go through. They include:

  • Credit card balance transfers
  • Convenience checks
  • Cash advances

Do I need to block a credit card that was stolen or used for fraud?

If your card was stolen or used for fraud, you should report it instead of temporarily blocking it.

  1. Access you account.

    Go to your account on the USAA Mobile App or usaa.com.

  2. Select the transaction.

    Identify the fraudulent transaction in your credit card’s activity.

  3. Report the fraud.

    Answer some questions to report the fraudulent activity.

What if I want to unblock a credit card?

To unblock a credit card, select “Get started” on this page. You can unselect any card that you’ve blocked.

Recurring transactions might be declined while the credit card is blocked. This could result in fees from any merchants you have recurring charges with, so you'll need to update your payment method.

No. The new credit card will have a new number and no block. If you want to add a temporary block, you can do it after activating the card.
