USAA Online Information Practices and Cookie Notice

This Online Information Practices Notice and Cookie Notice (“Notice”), provided by United Services Automobile Association and our subsidiaries and affiliates (“USAA,” “we,” “our,” or “us”), applies to individuals who use our Site, as defined below, and describes how we may collect, use, disclose, and otherwise process the personal information of individuals who access our Site.

California Residents

EEA or UK Residents

If you are located in the European Economic Area (“EEA”) or the United Kingdom (UK), please see our Privacy Statements (Opens in New Window) for those regions, which cover members who obtain products or services from the USAA entity named in the applicable Privacy Statement. This Notice is not applicable to EEA or UK residents.

Definitions

“Personal information” is information that identifies you and may include, but isn’t limited to, your email address and other contact information, financial and payment information, authentication information, and other information as protected by applicable law. It does not include personal information that is anonymized, aggregated, or de-identified.

“Site” means usaa.com, USAA mobile apps, and other websites or applications owned and operated by USAA and linked to this Notice, unless a different notice is posted on a particular website or is made available to you and by its terms, supplements or replaces any of the terms of this Notice.

Other USAA Privacy Policies

If you are a member and your personal information is “nonpublic personal information” that we collected in connection with providing you a financial product or service, then your personal information is covered by our Privacy Promise. If you are insured by us and your personal information includes “electronic protected health information,” your personal information is covered by our Insurance Information Practices Notices provided to you when you obtained your insurance policy, and as otherwise provided to you from time to time.

Personal Information Collection

We collect the following categories of personal information when you provide it to us, automatically when you visit our Site, and from our service providers and other parties:

  • Identifiers, such as name, address, and Social Security number
  • Personal records, such as contact information and financial information.
  • Characteristics of protected classifications, such as sex and marital status.
  • Commercial information, such as transaction and account information.
  • Internet or network activity information, such as browsing history and interactions with our Site.
  • Geolocation data, such as device location.
  • Audio, electronic, visual, or similar information, such as call and video recordings.
  • Professional or employment-related information, such as work history and prior employer.
  • Education information, such as school and date of graduation.
  • Inferences drawn from any of the personal information previously mentioned to create a profile about something such as an individual’s preferences and characteristics.

Personal Information Use

We process personal information to do things such as:

  • Logging on, creating, or editing your online account profile.
  • Accessing your insurance or banking online.
  • Obtaining a product or service from us.
  • Completing an online form, such as a credit card application.
  • Contacting or chatting with member support.
  • Completing a survey or quiz.
  • Requesting certain features, such as newsletters, updates, or other products.
  • Signing up for job alerts or request career information.
  • Joining one of our online communities.

We may combine automatically collected information with other Personal Information we obtain about you, which may include data we obtain from others.

Additionally, we collect personal information about you through your computer or mobile device using cookies and similar tracking technology. Cookies on our Site may be used to collect Personal Information about your online activities over time and across different online services.

Personal Information You Provide about Others

When you take an action involving another person, such as refer another person to our Site, share a job opportunity with them, or send them a payment, we may ask for that person’s personal information to process your request. We will only process that person’s personal information as provided in this Notice. You are not required to use our Site to let others know about us or our careers.

Personal Information Disclosure

We may disclose the personal information we collect about you in the following circumstances:

  • With your consent, including in our member agreements, or in accordance with your directions.
  • To our service providers for our everyday business purposes to help us deliver the services you request or to market to you our products and services, including credit card processors, technology, and customer support services; advertising delivery and measurement services; analytics providers; market research and data management services; web hosting; and web development.
  • To other companies or businesses in connection with a proposed sale or merger.
  • Among USAA affiliates to provide you with our full range of financial products and services, subject to the Privacy Promise.
  • To law enforcement, government agencies, courts, and other organizations when we believe in good faith that such sharing is reasonably necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding possible illegal activities or to comply with legal process, for example, a subpoena or a request from law enforcement or a government agency; or to respond to the potential violation of the rights of third parties or to protect the rights, property or safety of USAA, our employees, users, or any other person.

Data obtained through USAA’s short code program, or text messaging, will not be shared with any third parties for their marketing reasons or purposes.

User-Generated Content

If you choose to make public comments or place content on our Site, such as through our online communities, you acknowledge that such information may be available to other visitors to our Site. This means that it may be read, collected, and used by others without our knowledge or approval. Please do not post personal information to publicly available portions of our Site.

Social Media

When you visit or use our USAA-branded pages on social media, you may send us your information using the social media platform, for example, by posting on our page or sending us a direct message. Please do not send us personal information using social media. If you contact us via social media, we may have access to your public social media profile information. When you like or follow us on social media, we may be able to see your public profile information. If you tag friends on our social media, we may be able to see their public profile information. The information you send to us or that may be viewable or collected by us is governed by the social media platform’s privacy policy. We do not control the social media platforms privacy policies, which may be updated by the platform at any time

Cookies and Similar Online Tracking Technologies

We use cookies, software development kits (SDKs), and similar online tracking technologies (collectively, “Cookies”) for a variety of purposes and to enhance your online experience, for example, by allowing us to remember your log-in status, to analyze and customize our Site interactions with you, ensure your privacy and security with the non-public portion of our Site, and to tailor and control the advertising displayed on our Site. We use our own (first-party) and partner companies (third-party), including Meta and Yahoo, Cookies to support these activities. We may link information collected by Cookies to other information collected about you. To change your Meta privacy and advertising settings, login to your Facebook account and navigate to your account settings.

We may also work with vendors to capture data in real time, such as through “screen capture” or “session replay” technologies: we may use this information, for instance, to detect security threats, to analyze web traffic, or simply to better understand how our Site is being used.

We may also use certain web analytics services, such Google Analytics, to help us understand and analyze how visitors use our Site. We use this information to implement Google advertising features such as dynamic remarketing, interest-based advertising, audience targeting, behavioral reporting, demographics and interests reporting, user segment analysis, device reporting, display advertising, and impression reporting. Your browser may allow you to review and delete Cookies stored on your device, and/or to disable or otherwise prevent Cookies from being placed on your device. If you disable Cookies, you may not be able to use certain features on our websites, and disabling Cookies may invalidate opt outs that rely on Cookies to function.

To change your Meta privacy and advertising settings, login to your Facebook account and navigate to your account settings. You can also control advertising IDs on your iOS and Android devices by locating the privacy settings on your device. Users of other digital services may be able to opt-out of interest-based advertising through the provider of the digital service. For mobile devices, there are specific operating system and application controls for opting out of certain types of tracking or customized advertising. iOS and Android mobile device users, and possibly users of other mobile devices, may control in-application advertisements by disabling or resetting the mobile device advertiser ID. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of your digital service provider to determine if they engage in interest-based advertising, and, if so, how to act on your choices. We do not control your or third party settings and are not responsible for any choices you make using these mechanisms or the continued availability or accuracy of these mechanisms.

Mobile Applications

We process certain personal information that we obtain through our mobile apps (“App”), including your device when you download our App. We may disclose personal information obtained through our App to our affiliates, business partners, service providers, and other parties, as further described in the Personal Information Disclosure section above. To the extent we provide these parties access to your personal information obtained through our App, we require that they provide the same level of personal information protection as required by this Notice.

We will retain your personal information only for as long as we reasonably consider it necessary for achieving the purposes set out in this Notice, or for as long as we are legally required to retain it.

If you no longer wish to provide your personal information through our App, you may uninstall our App from your device. Note that this action will not delete your user account or any information we previously collected via the App or our other Sites.

Third-Party Information

We may obtain additional personal information about you from publicly available sources and from various third parties, such as marketers, researchers, and others for marketing purposes. For instance, we may work with data enhancement companies to learn more about our members or potential members to help provide more relevant ads and offers for you. We use this information to offer you customized marketing and advertising.

Email Marketing

We may also send you marketing emails. If you do not want to receive marketing materials by email, please indicate your preference on the contact information for your online account with us. We also provide opt-out information in all commercial email messages we send via an unsubscribe link. Please note that it may take us some time to process your requests consistent with applicable law. However, you may always choose to remove your email address from your USAA account. If you choose to remove your email address on file with us and have disabled email alert preferences for products and services, you will no longer receive email notifications.

How We Protect Your Personal Information

We use administrative, operational, and technical security processes to protect your personal information. Our Site uses the https protocol, which means that any personal information you send to us is protected by encryption. Our member logon pages require unique credentials and authentication to limit access. Please safeguard this access using strong, unique, and frequently changed passwords and security questions. We recommend that you do not use your Site credentials anywhere else. Please secure your devices used to access our online services. We also allow our members to update their account and profile information securely through the Site. Please see our Security Center.

How to Keep Your Information Accurate

Keeping your account information, including your personal and contact information, accurate and current is very important. If your account information is incomplete, inaccurate, or not current, log on to our Site and update your personal profile page.

Other Sites

Our Site includes links to other websites that we do not manage. The privacy practices of these linked websites and platforms are different from ours. Your information is governed by the privacy policies of the websites or platforms you visit. We encourage you to carefully read the privacy policy when visiting other websites. We do not guarantee and are not responsible for the privacy or security of these websites.

Minors

Our Site is not designed, directed, or marketed to individuals under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have received personal information from a person under the age of 13, we will delete it in accordance with applicable law.

Updates

We may change this Notice from time to time and without prior notice to you. If we make changes to this Notice, we will notify you by revising the Effective Date within the Notice, and in some cases, we may additionally notify you of changes we believe to be material by adding a temporary statement to our Site or providing you some other form of notification. Your continued use of our Site constitutes your acceptance and agreement to any changes to this Notice.
