What qualifies for classic and collector car insurance?

Antique, classic or collector cars definitions can vary. Classic and collector car insurance is for vehicles that are:

  • Driven on a limited basis and only for pleasure.
  • Stored in an enclosed, locked garage.
  • Not being used for racing, timed events or driver's education.
  • Recognized for their collectible value.

If your prized vehicle is the main one you drive, consider getting a quote for USAA Auto Insurance.

What do you get with this policy?

Agreed-value coverage

If your car is totaled, you’ll get the full insured value of your vehicle, minus the deductible. There's no depreciation.

Money you put into restoring your vehicle can make it much more valuable. You’re covered for things like replacement parts that are hard to find.

Is classic car insurance worth it?‍ ‍‍ ‍ See note 2

Classic cars typically increase in value over time, so you should consider having an insurance policy that covers your car for its full worth.

Let’s say you insured your 1965 Mustang with an agreed value of $30,000. Then it gets stolen. Classic car insurance would pay you $30,000 minus any deductible.

Your car's agreed value is based on its condition, rarity and features — with no depreciation. With a standard auto policy, depreciation could reduce your payout by thousands of dollars.

Classic car insurance FAQ

Several things can affect how much you pay for classic car insurance. Your car’s age and value, your driving record and whether you have a deductible are some of the things that may influence your premium.

You must store your classic car in an enclosed, secure structure. American Collectors Insurance may consider:

  • Private storage units.
  • Airplane hangars.
  • Carports in gated communities or on military bases.
  • Enclosed trailers that are fenced in or gated.

Examples of unacceptable storage options may include:

  • Open areas like parking lots or backyards.
  • Street parking or driveways.
  • Shared garages.
  • Carports that aren’t in gated communities or on military bases.
  • Temporary or portable storage units, such as canvas covers or tents.

To get classic car coverage, drivers on the policy will need:

  • At least five years of driving experience by the primary operator with a valid driver’s license. American Collectors Insurance prefers 10 years of experience.
  • A good driving record with no more than one moving violation or one at-fault accident within the past three years. The policy allows up to two incidents for households with more than one driver.
  • One regular-use vehicle for every licensed driver in the household. There are some exceptions for full-time students and retired members.

TLC is extra coverage you can buy that reimburses you for emergency expenses. For example, it covers expenses if you have an accident or your car breaks down.

Depending on your state, American Collectors Insurance offers several levels of coverage. If you have questions or want to learn more, call American Collectors Insurance at 866-919-9758.
