What's windstorm insurance?

It's specialized property insurance, also known as hurricane insurance. It helps cover your home, other structures and personal belongings if they're damaged by hurricanes, hail, tornadoes or other windstorm events. A standard homeowners policy may not cover these types of events if you live in a high-risk coastal area. And most property insurance won't cover storm surge or flood damage. If you're thinking about buying a home in one of these areas, your lender will most likely require you to have windstorm insurance and flood insurance in addition to homeowners insurance.

Let's review some scenarios your windstorm insurance may cover.

  • Hail Damage

You have broken windows or dents in your siding, shingles, metal panels and gutters.

  • Hurricane Damage

Your walls collapse and some of your personal belongings are damaged. Keep in mind, you'll need to file a separate claim for damage caused by flooding or storm surge.

  • Tornado Damage

The storm damages your roof, doors and windows. Your shed or detached garage could also be gone.

Do I need windstorm insurance?

If you live near the coast in any of the following states, your homeowners insurance most likely excludes windstorm coverage and you'll need to purchase a separate policy. We work with our insurance agency alliances to help make sure you get a great mix of pricing and service to protect your home.

How do deductibles and claims work?

You'll usually have separate wind and hurricane deductibles on your windstorm policy. Hurricane deductibles can be more expensive, and you'll typically pay them to cover damage from a named storm. Your state windpool or insurance company should have guidelines in place for when each deductible applies.
