Pennsylvania car insurance coverage requirements

Pennsylvania is a no-fault state, which means no matter who caused the accident, your personal injury protection insurance will provide initial coverage for covered medical costs up to your policy limits.

As of Jan. 1, 2024, Pennsylvania law requires drivers to have the following minimum bodily injury and property damage liability limits:

  • $15,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person

This helps cover expenses for the injuries or deaths of others involved in accidents where you're found at fault.

  • $30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident limit

This is the total amount of coverage for expenses related to injuries or deaths of others involved in accidents where you're found at fault.

  • $5,000 property damage liability coverage

This helps pay for damages to other people's property like vehicles, homes and other buildings if you're at fault for an accident.

  • $5,000 personal injury protection (PIP)

This helps cover medical expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who's at fault in an accident.

Some drivers choose to have higher limits and more coverages for greater protection. If you're responsible for injuries and damage that cost more than your policy will cover, you may have to pay out of pocket.

A popular coverage option is roadside assistance.See note3 It can help if you're broken down and need a tow. Many drivers also add rental reimbursement.See note4 It helps cover the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is in the shop for repairs after a covered loss.

If you're making payments to a leasing company or a lender, they may also require you to carry collision and comprehensive coverages. Learn more about the different types of car insurance coverage.
