Massachusetts coverage requirements and minimums

Massachusetts is a no-fault state, which means no matter who caused the accident, your personal injury protection insurance will provide initial coverage for covered medical costs up to your policy limits.

As of Jan. 1, 2024, Massachusetts law requires drivers to have the following minimum bodily injury and property damage liability limits:

  • $20,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person.

This helps cover costs for injuries or deaths to other drivers and their passengers if you cause an accident.

  • $40,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident limit.

This is the total amount of coverage for expenses related to injuries or deaths to other vehicles' drivers and their passengers in accidents in which you're found at fault.

  • $5,000 of property damage liability coverage.

This coverage helps pay for damages to other people's property, including vehicles, homes and other buildings in accidents in which you're found at fault.

  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage

Massachusetts drivers must have uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) coverage. Massachusetts requires at least $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident. This helps cover you and your passengers if you're in an accident caused by a driver who doesn't have insurance.

  • $8,000 of personal injury protection.

Personal injury protection (PIP) is mandatory in Massachusetts. This helps cover medical expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who's at fault in an accident.

Some drivers choose to have higher limits and more coverages for greater protection. If you're responsible for injuries and damage that cost more than your policy will cover, you may have to pay out of pocket.

A popular coverage option is roadside assistance.See note2 It can help if you're broken down and need a tow. Many drivers also add rental reimbursement.See note3 It helps cover the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is in the shop for repairs after a covered loss.

If you're making payments to a leasing company or a lender, they may also require you to carry collision and comprehensive coverages. Learn more about the different types of car insurance coverage.
