Types of coverage you can get

You’ve spent all this time planning. Now put the finishing touch on your event with coverage for things outside of your control.

Event liability

This can help protect you if you're held responsible for property damage to the venue or injuries. It can include:‍ ‍ See note 2

  • Bodily injury and property damage up to $2 million total.
  • Host liquor liability for alcohol-related incidents.
  • Event liability requirements your venue has.

Event cancellation

This can help reimburse you for lost deposits and fees. It may cover these unexpected circumstances and more:‍ ‍ See note 2

  • Extreme weather
  • Vendor bankruptcy
  • Military deployment
  • Accident or illness

Ways event insurance can help protect weddings and more

Here are some examples of how a policy can help:

  • Your venue goes bankrupt and closes just weeks before your event. Event cancellation coverage could save you thousands.
  • You accidentally break a statue at the venue while you're cleaning up after the event. Event liability coverage could help pay for the damage.

Special coverage if you’re hosting at home

A Markel event liability policy may act as your primary coverage over a homeowners policy.

So, if you’re hosting at home and have a covered claim, it might pay first before your homeowners policy kicks in.

Event insurance FAQ

You need to buy event cancellation coverage at least 14 days before your event and event liability coverage at least 1 day before your event.

If you’re planning ahead, you can buy either coverage up to 2 years in advance.

Keep in mind that many venues require proof of insurance at least 30 days before the event.

Event insurance generally provides “day of” coverage for the actual event. If your event is more than 1 day, you may need to buy multiple policies.

But if you get event liability coverage for a wedding, it’ll also cover the rehearsal and a rehearsal dinner up to 48 hours before the event, as well as setup and teardown within 24 hours.

You may be covered if you need to postpone or cancel your event because the guest of honor is a full-time military member who unexpectedly gets deployed or called back to duty.

You may also be covered if the guest of honor is a police officer or firefighter who has to return to duty.
