Getting Original Medicare coverage
Medicare is health insurance provided by the government for people 65 and over. It's also for those younger than 65 who are eligible because of a disability.
-
1. Start with Medicare.
If eligible, you can get Original Medicare through the federal government. It includes Part A, hospital insurance, and Part B, which covers doctor visits and outpatient care. You may delay Part B enrollment if you have insurance through an employer. To learn more about signing up for Original Medicare, visit medicare.gov.
-
2. Consider additional insurance.
After enrolling in Original Medicare, you can consider additional insurance options available through private insurance companies. USAA Life Insurance Company and our trusted insurance providers Humana and Aetna are committed to providing plans to meet your needs.

Medicare Insurance FAQ
The U.S. government manages Original Medicare, which is Medicare Part A and Part B. Medicare sets standard levels for this coverage, so it's the same in each state. But coverage from private insurers can vary by state.
Not necessarily. To determine if you'll need both Medicare and VA coverage, think about your health care needs. Also consider the benefits you're getting through the VA. Keep in mind:
- If you choose not to enroll in Medicare, you may be responsible for the cost of care received outside of the VA system.
- When you enroll in a prescription drug plan, you'll have the option to get medications from a local pharmacy as well as the VA.
The Medicare Initial Enrollment Period or IEP lasts for seven months. It includes the month you turn 65 as well as the three months before and after. For example, if your 65th birthday is May 4, your IEP is Feb. 1 to Aug. 31.
If your birthday is on the first of the month, then your IEP is determined as if your birthday were a month earlier. For example, if your 65th birthday is May 1, your IEP is Jan. 1 to July 31.
You may be eligible for Medicare before age 65 if you have a qualifying disability, end-stage renal disease, or ESRD or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. If you aren't eligible for Medicare based on age or for medical reasons, we can still help you with health insurance.
