How deductibles work
A deductible is what's subtracted from your claim's total payment amount. The average deductible starts at about $250. If you had $2,000 in damaged or stolen items, and a $250 deductible, you'd pay the first $250 to repair or replace your things. We'd cover the rest.

Your deductible is located in the coverage tab on your account summary page.
How the claims process works

Step 1: Tell us what happened.
You'll give us details on usaa.com or the USAA Mobile app.

Step 2: USAA provides an estimate.
We'll review what was damaged or stolen and write an estimate.

Step 3: We'll send the payment.
After reviewing and confirming coverage, we'll send the covered amount minus your deductible.

Step 4: Repair or replace items.
Use the payment to repair or replace your damaged items.
When you should file a renters claim
- The cost of the damage to your belongings is more than your deductible.
- Living in your home is a health or safety risk.
- You caused damage to someone else's property.
