What to do before, during and after a flood

Our flood safety tips can help you protect your house and help you prepare a safety evacuation plan.

Mitigation advice

Check, clean and repair gutters, downspouts and storm drains to direct rainfall away from your home. You'll want to make sure they don't have any rusted-out spots, holes or openings. Be sure to practice safe ladder use.

Fill reusable bottles with clean water for drinking. Bathtubs and sinks can be filled with water for flushing the toilet or washing clothes.

Unplug small appliances and electronics to reduce potential power surges. If you use a portable generator, ensure you have enough fuel and follow the manufacturer's instructions. For your safety, only use them outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Evacuation advice

Plan ahead in case you need to evacuate.

Have a full tank of gas in your car and any emergency supplies ready. Find a place to stay that's out of danger or locate an open shelter. If you have a pet, look for shelters that allow them (Opens in new window).

Gather or inventory important documents and valuables. Consider using waterproof containers.

Staying safe

Avoid areas subject to flooding such as underpasses, dips or canyons.

Avoid disaster areas. Your presence might hamper rescue or other emergency operations.

If water rises around your vehicle, leave it and immediately climb to higher ground.

If there's thunder and lightning and you can't find shelter, don't lie down. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly over 100 feet away.
