Funds transfers FAQ

General

A funds transfer is the movement of money between eligible accounts. You can transfer money between your accounts at USAA Federal Savings Bank (FSB) or between a USAA FSB account and a domestic checking or savings account at another financial institution.

You can set up same-day, future-dated and recurring funds transfers.

No. Our funds transfer service lets you move money between accounts. To pay your bills, you can use our USAA Pay Bills service.

You can send money to almost anyone with a bank account in the U.S. using Send Money With Zelle®. You'll need the recipient's email address or U.S. mobile phone number. Then log on to the USAA Mobile App and select "Zelle®."

You can transfer money to and from your external checking and savings accounts at no charge from us. External accounts are subject to verification.

No. You can only do a funds transfer to and from U.S. financial institutions. To send money internationally, you can use our wire transfer service, though a fee applies.

Transfer limits are designed to help protect and limit potential bank and member financial losses. If you need to transfer a larger amount, view your other transfer options.

Transfers to and from external bank accounts are generally subject to separate daily and 30-day limits. Recurring and one-time transfers count toward your available daily and 30-day limits.

  • Transfers to external bank accounts: $5,000 daily and $25,000 within 30 days
  • Transfers from external bank accounts: $5,000 daily and $25,000 within 30 days, subject to the other bank’s limits

You may occasionally qualify to transfer more than the standard limit. If you qualify on that day, you'll see a higher transfer limit amount.

Note: Additional limits restrictions may apply to newly established USAA FSB deposit accounts.

You can initiate a transfer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but transfers scheduled at or after 9 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, all day on weekends and federal holidays will be considered next business day transfers.

Transfers received at or after the applicable cutoff time on a business day or anytime on a non-business day (Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday) may increase your available balance; however the deposit or transfer:

  • Is generally not used to pay certain items that may process the same day, including Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions and checks.
  • May be available immediately for cash withdraws and debit card transactions, subject to any holds.

Between USAA FSB accounts: Transfers made on weekdays before 9 p.m. CT are available immediately. Transfers made at or after 9 p.m., on the weekend or on federal holidays are available only for ATM withdrawals and one-time purchases until the next business day.

From USAA FSB to another bank: generally 1 to 3 business days from your transfer date. Inquire with your receiving non-USAA bank about their funds availability policy.

Note: External accounts you own require verification before transfers can be initiated.

From another bank to USAA FSB: Initiate the transfer with us and it could be available right away. Some transfers are subject to a hold.

Yes. Here are some options to consider:

  • Use Send Money With Zelle®. You can send money to almost anyone with a bank account in the U.S. using the recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number. To get started, log on to the USAA Mobile App and select "Zelle®."

No. Your external accounts can be used to pay your USAA bill right away, even before the verification process is complete.

To help protect you from fraud and theft, we verify the ownership of all external accounts you own used for funds transfers. It's an industry standard designed to keep your money and personal information safer.

It usually takes up to three business days to complete the verification process, but that can vary based on how the account gets verified. You can start moving money to and from the account when it's listed as "Active" on the Manage Accounts page.

Temporary deposits are one of the ways we may verify your owned external account. We make two small deposits, each less than $1, into the account and then withdraw them right away so the balance of your account isn't affected. You'll get an email letting you know what to do with the temporary deposit amounts.

Funds must be available. If we can't withdraw the total amount of the temporary deposits, the verification process won't be complete and you'll need to start over. Additionally, your bank may charge an overdraft or non-sufficient funds fee.

Members cannot directly transfer money to or from external investment accounts using the USAA Mobile App or usaa.com. Through your investment provider you can set up a transfer from or to your USAA bank account. Please visit your investment provider for more information.
