A hard inquiry happens when you apply for credit cards, loans or other types of credit. That means a potential lender examines your credit report and uses the information in their decision to approve your application.
A soft inquiry usually happens when your bank or insurance company checks your credit for a promotional offer, like when you're preselected for a credit card. These types of inquiries don't affect your credit score and can't be removed from your report.
