What to consider before canceling your USAA renters policy
We understand that sometimes you need to cancel your policy. Before you do, we want to help make sure it's the right decision to keep you financially secure. There could be other options for you.
Reason1 Flood and earthquake coverage
Your renters insurance covers your belongings in the event they're lost in a natural disaster.
Why stay with USAA? We make flood and earthquake coverage standard.
Reason2 Personal liability protectionSee note1
Nobody wants to be sued but accidents can happen anywhere. This coverage provides protection if someone makes a claim or files a suit against you (or someone covered by the policy).
Why stay with USAA? You can get up to $1 million of liability coverage.
Reason3 Worldwide coverageSee note2
Break-ins can occur whether it's your car or your apartment. Your renters insurance follows you wherever you take your stuff.
Why stay with USAA? We'll repair or replace your stolen property with items similar in quality and worth with no depreciation.See noteSee note3
Reason4Moving and storageSee note4
Before you pack things up, or before you put some of your personal belongings in storage, just remember: We've got you covered.
Why stay with USAA?No matter where you store your belongings, our coverage stays with you — and that's standard.
Renters insurance does not cover breakage, marring, scratching or damage from temperature changes caused during your move or while storing your belongings.
You have options to help fit your coverage into your budget.
We can help you adjust your policy while keeping your valuable protection and give you some options to think about.Moving into assisted living?
If you don't need to insure your belongings anymore, you can choose to just keep your liability protection.
Moving in with your parents?
You may still need to protect your stuff, even in storage or at your parent's place of residence. Your renters insurance may also have a lower deductible than your parent's homeowners insurance. You may be able to remove liability protection since it may be covered by your parent's policy.
New and broader technology coverage may also be available.
Moving on base?
You may want to keep your policy since Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) may not protect your possessions. Living on base may provide a discount on your renters policy.See note5
Moving in with roommates?
Your policy covers your belongings, but your roommates will need their own policy to cover their stuff. Your roommate's policy may not cover you and you may not have coverage on your furniture, clothing and other personal items. New and broader technology coverage may also be available.See note6
Without renters insurance you may not be protected from a liability loss, for example if a fire breaks out while preparing food that damages neighboring units. Additionally, your landlord may require you to carry renters insurance.
