Collectibles insurance FAQ
It depends on several things like the type of collectible, its value and the coverage limit you choose.
While the cost can vary, many collectors find it’s worth the peace of mind they get knowing their collection is protected.
You’ll need to send us an inventory of your collection and a photo for any items valued over $2,000. The insurer doesn’t usually require an appraisal.
To reach an agreed value, the insurer relies on underwriter knowledge and established pricing guides. If they have questions about the value of your items, they may contact you.
Agreed-value coverage insures your unscheduled collectibles for what you and your insurance provider agree they’re worth when you buy the policy See note 2. So, if they’re lost or damaged in a covered event, you'll receive that value minus any applicable deductible. This excludes stamps, coins, collectible wine, wine accessories and media.
With a standard personal property policy, you'd likely only receive the cost to repair or replace the items brand-new. This won’t take into account their collector value.
Example: A house fire destroys your vintage model train collection. If you had an agreed-value coverage of $30,000 on the collection, you'd get $30,000 minus your deductible.
But if you insured the same collection under a regular personal property policy, you’d likely only receive the amount it costs to buy a new model train set minus your deductible See note 3.
VPP insurance may help cover higher value individual items like jewelry, smartwatches, guns, cameras, and more from accidental damage or loss without a deductible. Collectibles insurance provides coverage for special collections not covered by a VPP policy. Learn more about VPP insurance.
