It depends. If you're borrowing a car regularly, you should consider getting a non-owner operator policy. If it's an infrequent or rare scenario, you may not need it. But you should still consider what financial protections you have in place if you were to get into an accident driving someone else's car. Their car may be covered by their insurance with you as a driver, but you could be financially responsible for damages or injuries to other people.

It's important to get property insurance to cover your stuff in case of theft or damage. In addition, liability coverage helps protect your finances if you're ever held responsible for someone else's injuries or property damage. While you're living at the academy, we'll also add specific endorsements to your personal property insurance policy at no additional cost. These endorsements are designed to help protect valuable items, such as a class ring or military-issued laptop.

Your military-issued laptop is covered at no extra charge. Other personal electronics are covered for losses such as fire and theft, but not for accidental breakage, drops and spills, or misplacement. For those types of things, our Technology Endorsement is what you need.

The value of your personal belongings and your coverage needs are just some of the things that determine your premiums. Academy Personal Property Insurance is a renters policy with special discounts and additional coverages, such as for your class ring and military-issued laptop, at no extra charge. Optional liability coverage is also available. Depending on your situation, the cost can be as low as $5 per month.

You can use it to buy uniforms, household items or a car. You can also put the money toward an emergency fund or paying down high-interest debt, but you cannot use it to pay off educational expenses. Note 10 Loan is available to academy cadets and midshipmen. Academy cadets and midshipmen are eligible to apply for the loan starting the beginning of their junior year in the Academy. Newly commissioned officers are eligible to apply for the loan within one year after commissioning. USAA Federal Savings Bank checking account is required to apply for a Career Starter loan.

Loan payments will be deferred from the date of loan closing up to 90 days after Academy class commissioning date used at application or up to 60 days after loan closing date if already commissioned. Finance charges will accrue during the deferral period. If an academy midshipman's or cadet's commission date is pushed back or delayed, the first payment deferral period cannot be extended.

Payment Example: A 60-month Career Starter loan with an annual percentage rate (APR) of 0.75% and a first payment deferral period of one year would have monthly payments of $17.11 per one thousand dollars borrowed (One year means 365 days and is used here for the purpose of calculating an example payment. Deferral period may be longer or shorter depending on contract date, commission date and other factors.). Payment amount may vary based on length of deferral period.

Use of the term "member" or "membership" refers to membership in USAA Membership Services and does not convey any legal or ownership rights in USAA. Restrictions apply and are subject to change. To join USAA, separated military personnel must have received a discharge type of Honorable or General Under Honorable Conditions. Eligible family members may also join USAA.
