If you need to get to safety fast, then you need a plan.
At a minimum you should ask yourself these questions when creating an evacuation plan:
- How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
- What is my shelter plan?
- What is my evacuation route?
- What is my family/household communication plan?
You should prepare your kit far in advance to always be ready.
Here are a few items that you may want to include in your kit.
Three-day supply of food and water as well as a manual can opener.
(You'll need one gallon of water per person per day.)
First-aid kit and any medicines you or your family may need.
Battery-powered flashlight, radio and plenty of batteries.
Car charger for your cell phone.
Food and supplies for your pets.
Safeguarding documents now can save you from headaches later.
If you have to leave your house, FEMA recommends you take:
- Identification
- Financial and legal documents
- Medical information
- Emergency contacts
Remember safety comes first. Leave immediately if the situation is unsafe.
Photographing your property before a disaster can speed up your recovery process should it be damaged.
Home: Photograph the exterior of your home.
Vehicles: Photograph the VIN number and the odometer to get the mileage.
Belongings: Photograph the rooms inside your home capturing your personal property.
